Remote viewing is the feature owners use daily, and it depends entirely on the network: the recorder connects through your router to the internet, and your phone reaches it either through the manufacturer's P2P cloud (scan a QR code, works through most connections) or a directly configured path such as DDNS with port forwarding — which must be done carefully to avoid exposing your cameras to the internet at large.
Upload bandwidth is the constraint nobody checks: watching your cameras remotely consumes your site's upload, which on many connections is a fraction of the download speed. Sub-streams exist precisely for this — a lighter secondary stream for phones, with full quality kept for local recording.
We configure remote access on the secure path, change every default password, and test from an outside connection before calling it done.
Brands we fit and service
The router & network market splits into hardware built for South African conditions and lookalikes that fail at the first hard season. These are the manufacturers we trust on our installations:
- TP-Link
- Ubiquiti
- MikroTik
- Huawei
See our brand guides for how these manufacturers compare.
When the router & network goes wrong
These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:
- Remote viewing unavailable — The app worked for months, then "device offline" — though the system records fine locally.
- DDNS problems — The DDNS hostname stops resolving, or resolves to a stale address after every reconnection.
- Slow or stuttering live view — Remote view buffers, drops to a slideshow, or lags many seconds behind reality.
- IP address conflicts — Cameras knock each other offline, devices swap identities, faults move around the system.
- Weak Wi-Fi to wireless cameras — Wireless cameras freeze, lag or drop off — worse at range, worse when the microwave runs.
