Troubleshooting guide

Common Connectors problems

The 3 failures our Durban technicians meet most often — what you'll see, why it happens, and how we fix it properly.

Every fault below comes from real call-outs across Durban and surrounding areas. Some have a quick check you can try yourself before booking anyone — where that's true, we say so. When a visit is needed, the diagnosis is done with a signal meter, quoted before work starts, and covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty. New to this part? Start with the connectors component guide.

1. Corroded BNC connector

What you'll see: Analog picture degrading over months — contrast fading, noise creeping in, then video loss in damp weather.

Why it happens: Moisture reaching an unsealed outdoor termination; coastal air accelerates it dramatically.

How we fix it: Cut back to bright copper, crimp a new compression BNC, and seal the joint in a proper enclosure — plus a check of every other termination from the same install, which usually shares the disease.

2. Loose or badly made RJ45

What you'll see: An IP camera that drops when its cable is touched, negotiates at low speed, or loses PoE intermittently.

Why it happens: Untwisted pairs at the plug, the wrong wiring order, no strain relief, or a plug never fully crimped.

How we fix it: Re-terminate to T568B with proper strain relief and verify with a tester — every pair, both ends, PoE under load.

3. DC power jack failure

What you'll see: A camera that reboots when wind moves its cable, or a connector warm to the touch.

Why it happens: A loose barrel connection arcing under load, undersized joints, or corrosion inside the jack.

How we fix it: Replace the connector, support the cable so the joint carries no mechanical load, and confirm voltage at the camera under full night-time load.

Symptom doesn't match any of these?

Faults overlap — a "connectors problem" is sometimes another link in the chain wearing a disguise. Describe what your system is doing on 069 423 8290 (or WhatsApp a photo of the error screen) and we'll tell you which component it actually sounds like, free, before anything is booked.
