Troubleshooting guide

Common Power Supply problems

The 3 failures our Durban technicians meet most often — what you'll see, why it happens, and how we fix it properly.

Every fault below comes from real call-outs across Durban and surrounding areas. Some have a quick check you can try yourself before booking anyone — where that's true, we say so. When a visit is needed, the diagnosis is done with a signal meter, quoted before work starts, and covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty. New to this part? Start with the power supply component guide.

1. Cameras rebooting at night

What you'll see: Cameras work all day but drop or reboot after dark — often several at once, often in cold weather.

Why it happens: IR LEDs switching on push current demand up; a marginal supply or thin cable then sags below the camera's minimum voltage.

How we fix it: We measure voltage at the camera under night load, then fix the real cause: heavier gauge cable, a supply with genuine headroom, or relocating power closer to the camera.

2. No power to cameras

What you'll see: One camera, one group, or the whole system is dead; the recorder may still be running.

Why it happens: A failed supply or blown fuse, a shorted cable run taking out a shared output, or surge damage after a storm or load-shedding spike.

How we fix it: We isolate the failed branch with a meter, replace fuses and supplies with correctly rated parts, and add surge protection so the next spike hits a R100 protector, not every camera.

3. System dies during load shedding

What you'll see: Every outage is a surveillance blackout — exactly when the property is most vulnerable.

Why it happens: No battery backup, or a backup battery that aged out years ago and now holds minutes, not hours.

How we fix it: We size a UPS or DC backup for your recorder and cameras to ride through your actual schedule, and put battery replacement on the maintenance calendar.

Symptom doesn't match any of these?

Faults overlap — a "power supply problem" is sometimes another link in the chain wearing a disguise. Describe what your system is doing on 069 423 8290 (or WhatsApp a photo of the error screen) and we'll tell you which component it actually sounds like, free, before anything is booked.
