Troubleshooting guide

Common DVR (Digital Video Recorder) problems

The 5 failures our Durban technicians meet most often — what you'll see, why it happens, and how we fix it properly.

Every fault below comes from real call-outs across Durban and surrounding areas. Some have a quick check you can try yourself before booking anyone — where that's true, we say so. When a visit is needed, the diagnosis is done with a signal meter, quoted before work starts, and covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty. New to this part? Start with the dvr (digital video recorder) component guide.

1. Hard drive not detectedNo HDD / HDD Error

What you'll see: The DVR beeps or shows "No HDD" / "HDD Error"; live view works but nothing records.

Why it happens: A failed drive, a loose SATA or power lead after transport, an undersized PSU, or a desktop-grade drive that has worn out.

How we fix it: We test the drive properly, reseat or replace cabling, and fit a surveillance-grade drive sized for your retention needs — then verify recording and playback before we leave.

2. DVR won't boot

What you'll see: No lights, endless boot loop, or the logo screen forever; cameras and monitor are fine.

Why it happens: A failed internal power supply (very common after surges and load-shedding spikes), corrupted firmware, or a shorted hard drive dragging the rail down.

How we fix it: We isolate PSU vs board vs drive, repair or replace the failed part, and re-flash firmware where recoverable — recovering your recording archive whenever the drive itself is healthy.

3. Recording has stopped

What you'll see: Live view is perfect, but playback shows gaps — or nothing at all for days or weeks.

Why it happens: Recording schedules accidentally changed, motion-only recording with badly tuned detection, a drive that has failed silently, or overwrite settings misconfigured.

How we fix it: We audit schedule, detection zones and drive health, fix the actual cause, and set up the system so a future recording failure is signalled instead of silent.

4. Lost administrator password

What you'll see: The DVR is running, but nobody has the admin password — settings and playback are locked.

Why it happens: Installer never handed the credentials over, staff turnover, or a factory password long forgotten.

How we fix it: For system owners we perform the manufacturer's official reset procedure (proof of ownership required), then set proper credentials and record them in a handover document.

5. HDMI/VGA display not working

What you'll see: The recorder is running (lights, beeps, app works) but the connected TV or monitor shows no signal.

Why it happens: Output resolution set higher than the display supports, a failed HDMI port, or the wrong input selected on the screen.

How we fix it: We recover the output resolution via the app or a VGA fallback, test the ports, and configure a resolution every connected display can handle.

Symptom doesn't match any of these?

Faults overlap — a "dvr (digital video recorder) problem" is sometimes another link in the chain wearing a disguise. Describe what your system is doing on 069 423 8290 (or WhatsApp a photo of the error screen) and we'll tell you which component it actually sounds like, free, before anything is booked.
